The Green flag

Upcountry

A railway station at Pattipola… the train – ‘Udarata Menike’, the guard signals ‘Go’ and the train begins laboriously to gather momentum.  The inquisitive eye of a little girl is intent in what happens around being perhaps is her first journey by train…….

Mahiyangana chaithya

Mahiyangana is historically recounted to be the location of Lord Buddha’s first visit to Sri Lanka – a Duruthu poya day of January such as today.  The artificially illuminated Pagoda or the ‘Chethiya’ stands majestically on a clear, starry night and framed through the branches of a ‘bo’ tree.

Journeying pushing a shadow

A view from my hotel window of a lady on her scooter; the long shadow is what attracted me to capture a series of exciting images from this location. Rajasthan – India.

Call from a Hutch

A familiar site no more, but a beneficial facility to the masses a few years ago…. an old timer makes use of a coin operated phone at the precincts of the Railway station at Gampaha.

Laundryman’s dashing

Raw00305

The ‘laundry watta’, or where washing of garments and linen take place is a wet and messy place to be at.  The hardworking workers exert a lot of tedious physical effort to get the soiled linen clean and essentially abusing the fabric to the extent of it being fiercely dashed repeatedly on a concrete surface is intriguing to observe. Kotahena – Sri Lanka

Decked in her work cloths and nestled amongst the bushes of lush tea, a basket woven of cane tethered from her forehead, the plucked tea leaves still gathered in her hands, this woman posed for a moment for me to capture this portrait. Hatton – Sri Lanka

Serenity of tea land

Wouldn’t I love to wake up to this site each morning… the misty morning, layers upon layer of contoured tea bushes….., the wind breakers standing sentinel, gentle lighting on the hinterlands, ….……? Kotagala – Sri Lanka
